The Science Behind da Vinci

According to a study of 138 patients by Peter Lim, MD, da Vinci Surgery patients experienced:

  • Significantly less pain, resulting in decreased use of pain medication after the procedure
  • More successful minimally invasive surgery, less likely to need a total abdominal hysterectomy (9% of laparoscopy cases transitioned to total abdominal, compared to 4% of robotic-assisted cases)
  • Shorter hospital stay (on average only 1.6 days) and faster recovery times
  • Significantly less blood loss
  • No increase in operative time
    • On average, 50 minutes for hysterectomy procedures
    • On average, 147 minutes for cancer procedures

In addition, Dr. Lim concluded that the use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System is ideal for complex gynecological procedures and overweight patients.

Studies at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical Center and Stanford University Medical Center reported additional benefits to the surgeon, including 3D vision of the surgery location, decreased fatigue, added dexterity and increased precision.
